Summer is right around the corner and if you live in NYC your skin is already starting to show it. The inconsistency in weather temperature and humidity reminds me of a bad relationship. My mantra for summer is Protect, Hydrate, Balance.
Protect your skin from sun damage. Sunscreen should be your next best friend in summer. The harmful UV rays can really damage and accelerate skin aging. Look for broad spectrum UV protectant with Zinc Oxide and Titanium Oxide as physical blockers. Vitamin C! I cannot emphasize the benefits of Vitamin C. While you enjoy those delicious sips of orange juice remember to use a Vitamin C serum to brighten, fade sunspots and boost collage. Don't forget, it also helps protect against sun induced free radical damage.
Hydrate your skin. I have mentioned this in real life conversations with clients and on my social platform that water is a key but underrated ingredient for a good skin health. As much as its important to keep a track of body hydration especially during summer, it is also important to hydrate the skin from sun damage. Hyaluronic Acid is a powerful ingredient that draws moisture into the skin. Light and non greasy, ideal for hot, humid days. Aloe Vera is natures gift for our skin. You can apply it raw by cutting the pulp from the leaf and applying it directly on the skin. Its gel like texture helps soothe sunburn, irritation and inflammation. Aloe vera based gels are lightweight and have a cooling effect in summer.
Balance is a word I've been trying to incorporate in all aspects of my life and its tough. Balance however does help with maintaining the goal long term. Bring balance in your skin by using Salicylic Acid or Glycolic Acid based cleanser especially if your skin tends to get oily during summer. It'll help you gently unclog pores, remove sweat and grime and dead skin cells. Use 1 -2x/week if prone to breakouts. Niacinamide (Vitamin B3) is also great ingredient to watch out for in skin care products. It balances oil, reduces tightness and tightens pores. Also boosts your skin barrier and helps reduce dark spots.
A few very important things to remember are Using Retinol can increase sun sensitivity during summer.
Heavy Oils or thick occlusive products can easily clog your pores.
Harsh scrubs or excessive use of harsh toners can lead to imbalance of hydration an oil production in skin.
